Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas Project Launch with Clean Ocean Access

Senators Sheldon Whitehouse and Jack Reed will speak at the launch of a new multi-year project with Clean Ocean Access and 11th Hour Racing to address plastic pollution and litter in Rhode Island. Funded by 11th Hour Racing, the Healthy Soils, Health Seas initative aims to tackle ocean pollution at its root: on land. The project brings together existing composting efforts in an integrated model to divert food waste from entering the landfill, and ultimately, the waters of our Ocean State. Project partners include Rhodeside Revival, The Composting Plant, FoodCycle, and Aquidneck Community Table. Plastic makes up 10-15% of the material entering our landfill and food waste makes up another 30-35%. Moreover, the Johnston landfill is expected to reach capacity by 2034, according to the RI Resource Recovery Corporation. With the potential to divert nearly 50% of the materials entering our landfill, integrated recycling and composting efforts could double the landfill lifetime through 2049. Healthy Soils, Healthy Seas comes on the heels of statewide efforts to curb plastic pollution, including Governor Raimondo's new Task Force to Tackle Plastics and the Zero Plastics Marina Initiative. This year, Rhode Island also became the first state to sign the UN-led Clean Seas Pledge during the Newport stopover of the 2018 Volvo Ocean Race. Improving ocean health starts on land, and with this comprehensive approach to address land-based waste and litter, Rhode Island is on track to turning the tide on ocean pollution.
