In honor of the National Women's History Theme for 2019, "Visionary Women: Champions of Peace & Nonviolence" we are excited to welcome to our spring Women in Business After Hours, Dr. Joan Johnson-Freese, presenting, "The Year of the Woman"   While it was 2018 that was dubbed "The Year of the Woman" by many media outlets, there have been other "years" of the woman and all reflect changing parameters for women's involvement in economic, social and political aspects of life that continue beyond the dubbed year, and are continuing, at a local, international and global level. The importance of gender equality and women's empowerment at all levels is reflected in both UN declarations and US legislation yet few people know anything about what the goals of those declarations or legislation are, and why they are important. Beyond gender equality being a social justice issue, gender perspectives have been found key to maintaining national and international security. The security of women - ranging from being free from domestic violence to having a political voice and being included in peace processes - is a key indicator of the security of a community or country.
